Understanding the egg donation process can help you feel more prepared and confident. Below is a step-by-step guide on what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.

Prior To The Procedure:

You will be given hormonal injections for the next 10-12 days to stimulate the follicles in the ovaries. You will be taught how to self administer the injections. It is vital that the medication is taken at the correct time and stored correctly. We will only know how many eggs were formed in these follicles once the retrieval is done.
Please check that you have been given enough medication, syringes, alcohol swabs and needles until your next visit.
You will be required to see the doctor about 3- 4 times in the next 2 weeks to monitor the growth of the follicles.
Once the preservation cycle starts, you may not exercise, swim, be intimate, have alcohol, take inflammatory medication and limit caffeine intake. Please inform the doctor of all the medication you are taking.
You can take panado ( 2x 500mg tablets) 3 times a day if you have pain.
Eat a balanced diet high in antioxidants, omega-3 and fatty acids.
Side effects of the medication may include headaches, a mood, tender breast, bloating & fullness.
This stimulation will not interfere with your fertility as these follicles for this cycle will naturally disintegrate and new ones will form next month.

New beginnings

On The Day Of Egg Retrieval

You should not eat and drink from 22h00 from the night before and you may not wear perfume or scented lotions or smoke on the day of retrieval.
You will be welcomed by friendly staff at the fertility clinic.
You will be advised by the nursing staff to empty your bladder before the procedure.
Depending on the clinic, you will meet the anaesthetist who will put you to sleep during the procedure.
A thin needle is passed through the vaginal wall into the ovary, (no cutting occurs) and then into every follicle to retrieve the egg.
After the procedure, you will be woken up and the staff will monitor your vitals. You will be given something light to drink and eat. Once you are stable and fully awake, you may leave.

Light spotting can occur after the procedure but it should never be a full on period. Mild tenderness & sensitivity is normal.
You need to have someone to collect you as driving is not advised. The rest of the day is a Netflix day. Please take it easy and take medication as prescribed if required.
You can expect a normal period in a week or 2 after retrieval.
No intimacy for 2 weeks after the procedure.
